So, I'm fairly well-travelled. I figured that being my next strongest language after English, I would be okay in French. But recently, it has been pointed out that it's nowhere near as good as I thought it is. Here's why.
French term: "Biscuits d'avoine"
My translation: "Airplane biscuits?"
Actual translation: "Oatmeal cookies"
French term: "Cour d'appels"
My translation: "Apple cores?"
Actual translation: "Appeals court"
French term: "Soupe à champignons"
My translation: "Soup of champions!"
Actual translation: "Mushroom soup"
In conclusion, I know just enough French to be lured into a false sense of security. I actually know just enough French to get myself in trouble and think I can talk myself out of it.
My French: "Bon jeu, ma soeur."
Attempted meaning: "Good day, sir."
Actual meaning: "Good game, my sister."

My favourite is still "coin lecture," which I spotted at the ROM's "Wonder Bread Zone of Wonder." And yes, that's really what it's called.
And I spotted this written up on the wall alongside other phrases like "Dinosaurs!", "Ancients Egyptians!" and said to John:
"Geez, what kid wants to attend a coin lecture? How boring is that?"
To which he explained that "coin lecture" is French for "reading corner."
Which is even MORE boring if you ask me...
