The Oscars: A celebration of more crap.

Like the circus atmosphere of the Superbowl, the Academy Awards is a circus in it's own right. I would have to say that the most ridiculous aspect of this is the red carpet fashion show.

Okay, I understand that it's an awards ceremony, and you're supposed to dress up for it. What I find ridiculous is the meticulous attention people spend to what other people wear to the Oscars. The day after the Oscars, I see "fashion experts" disect, judge, and criticize the outfits that the actors and actresses wore on the red carpet. They are unforgiving, sarcastic, and extremely sad examples of human beings.

It makes me angry that people will talk about dresses more than the nominated movies (which very few people are watching). It is much like the amazing Superbowl game that I watched a few years ago that was completely overshadowed by Janet Jackson's nipple.

There are also musical presentations that I personally can do without, but I understand if some people like to watch them. Apparently, they've okayed the use of "bitches" in the lyrics to one of the songs this year. I'd like to thank the Academy...

Disclaimer: Anyone who knows me knows that I am the furthest thing from a fashion expert. I occasionally fluke off being so out of fashion that I catch the 2nd wave of popularity when the trend makes a comeback. I'm currently waiting for white socks with black shoes to come back into style.

The real title of this blog entry should be "Baiting celestialspeedster" or "Getting on celestialspeedster's goat".
When you expect upwards of 40 million people to be looking at you, wouldn't you be meticulous about how you look?
I admit that so-called fashion experts disecting outfits on the red carpet are unnecessary. But a kick in the groin is also unnecessary yet equally fun.

(Flocons does a victory dance.)

I would much rather that red carpet interviewers say something like: "Oh there's Actress-X who's nominateed for Best Actress in Movie-X. Let's talk to her. Let's talk to her about the character from the movie. Who does she think is going to win best director? The film talks about such and such issues. What does she have to say about that?"

Instead, I hear them spewing stuff like this: "Oh my god, there's Actress-X. She's currently dating Actor-Y, but her date tonight is Actor-Z! Let's see who she's wearing. Doesn't she look beautiful in that dress? I wonder which post-Oscar party she's going to?"

The red carpet is like a cocktail party. There is not enough time or opportunity to seriously discuss the gravity of the work being honoured. So, you do briefly talk about your experiences working with, say, Ang Lee. Then you talk about your dress.
I think you should have an Oscar viewing party since you seem so obsessed with it. We can sit at opposite ends of the room will bullhorns so that everyone hears our debate.
I hope Jon Stewart doesn't embarrass me.
